Do you eat a lot of melons in the summer months? We totally do. I have always hated knowing I have to cut those darn things. Melon cutting is not my speciality. I don’t have the strongest hands (a gift from my RA) and it can be a bit tough for me most of the time.
I usually end up asking my husband to do it then I sit and complain about the mess he made and how he does the cutting. He loves it:). LOL! I am lucky he puts up with me and likes to handle my melons! Ok ok, moving on.
I Found Out How to Cut a Melon
We host a big 4th Of July weekend every other year with some of our long time friends who are really our family. When we are all together us ladies take turns prepping food and putting things out for all the husband and kids. My sweet friend Alex took on the melon prep this time. She grabbed what she needed and washed the watermelon then began. I had walked past her right after she started and I had to do a double take. Huh, what the hell is she doing? She cut the ends off the melon first then turned it on one end and started using the knife to “shave” the rind off. I’d never seen anyone cut a melon like that.
I watched for a few minutes then asked her what she was doing. I’m sure she replied with a silly, sarcastic answer like “cutting the watermelon” or “what does it look like” as she so gracefully got all the rind off and then started cutting up the inside. Of course, I was in awe and asked her where she learned to do this. It looked like a magic trick and I really wanted to learn it!
She quickly replied “TikTok”. Oh, well, I don’t use that app so I have not seen this. And no, I don’t think I’m missing out and I am not going to download it and start using it. I know myself well enough to know I wont be able to put it down and I already battle my Pinterest addiction as it is!
She went on to tell me it was super easy and I should try it. So a week or so later after we had recovered from all of our company, I did try it. Let me just say, MIND BLOWN!!
I have never used this technique or seen anybody do it this way till I had watched her. And let me tell you, it is so freaking easy! It wasn’t hard on my hands and it did not create much mess. Another advantage is that you aren’t wasting as much of that yummy melon flesh when you “shave” off the rind this way.
What Are The Steps to This Melon Cutting Trick?
If, like me, you live in the dark ages and seem to always be late to the party, here is a quick step by step and some pictures so you can try it too!!
- First wash your melon and grab a large knife and a cutting board that is big enough to put your melon on.
- Then cut the ends off the melon. Not too much but just enough so your melon will stand up on each end.
- Next you are going to take your knife and put the edge of your blade just to where the white of the rind starts. Slowly push it down the inside of the rind following the curve of the melon.
- You are going to do that all the way around your melon, turning the melon as you go.
- Once that end is finished, you are going to flip the melon over and do the same thing from the other end.
- You should end up with a melon that has no rind left and looks super cool.
- This is when I turn it back on its side and slice the way I want it!
Are There Any Other Melon Cutting Hacks?
See? So incredibly easy and it’s fun too! We have a flock of chickens so I usually throw my rinds out to them to nibble on. Sometimes I even toss them out for the deer to get a nibble. It can be such a nice treat for all of them in the hot summer.
I have done this with watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew. I don’t have to ask my husband to cut these guys for me anymore and I can then do it how I want to:) Unfortunately, I can’t share a link for TikTok. However, f you are on there, I’m sure you can easily find a video showing this cool melon cutting technique.
If you know another super awesome, easy way to cut melon, I am all ears! There are also several different melon cutting tools on Amazon but I haven’t used any. Hopefully this can help you out like it did me:)
Talk to you soon!
